Badger Wind Farm

Bringing clean energy, investment, and job growth to Logan and McIntosh Counties

Project location: Logan and McIntosh Counties, North Dakota
Generating capacity: 250 MW
Homes powered: ~110,000 homes
Project lifetime: 30 years
Interconnection: MISO

Badger Wind Farm will help meet North Dakota’s energy needs by providing clean, reliable wind-powered electricity. Developed by Ørsted, this 250 MW project will power around 110,000 homes every year, while creating new opportunities and economic benefits for Logan and McIntosh Counties. The farm is expected to operate for 30 years, delivering long-term value to the community.

Badger Wind Farm is projected to contribute tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue to local services over its lifespan without raising costs for residents. This increased tax base will support essential services, including schools and public safety. With 200–300 construction jobs and permanent roles for ongoing operations, the project will provide a significant boost to the local workforce and stimulate economic growth.

Our approach to wind development

Being a part of your community

At Ørsted, we listen to the communities in which we live and work and are committed to being a good neighbor for years to come. We proactively engage with residents and local officials throughout the construction and operation phases to ensure a direct line of communication with the community.

We are committed to supporting the local community through ongoing donations to schools, emergency services, and charitable organizations, with a special focus on youth programs. Some of our key contributions include sponsoring local events such as the Wishek Summer Fun Festival, funding improvement projects at the Wishek Civic Center, and actively developing new sponsorship and donation initiatives. These efforts are designed to expand the reach of Badger Wind's positive impact, ensuring broader access to the benefits we provide to the surrounding community.

Working with landowners

Ørsted values the importance of land for our lease partners and is committed to a careful, considerate design for every project. With extensive experience across the U.S., we work to protect roads, minimize impacts on neighbors, and preserve soil integrity. Landowners partnering with Badger Wind Farm can expect a consistent income, with payments averaging $2 million annually, while only a small portion of their land is needed for wind turbines. This approach allows agricultural activities to continue on the majority of their property, providing income diversification that enhances financial security and resilience against changing commodity prices for the agricultural community.

Supporting the school district

Logan and McIntosh Counties benefit directly from the Badger Wind Farm’s contributions to local education and services. Over its 30-year operation, Badger Wind Farm is projected to generate more than $15 million in tax revenue, providing essential support to school districts, fire departments, and public health facilities in the area. These funds will help enhance local education and community resources, creating a lasting positive impact without additional tax burdens on residents.

Frequently asked questions about Badger Wind
  • How will this project impact our community in Logan and McIntosh Counties?
Badger Wind Farm will generate long-term value for Logan and McIntosh Counties, stimulating the local economy and supporting public services. The project is projected to contribute more than $15 million in tax revenue over its lifespan, which will be used to enhance schools, emergency services, and public health resources—all without raising local tax rates. Additionally, the project will create construction jobs and provide ongoing operational support, boosting the local workforce.
  • What are the benefits of wind energy?
Wind energy supports local economies by generating revenue for state and local governments, schools, and private landowners. It also creates jobs and requires minimal local resources, providing clean, reliable power.
  • How does wind energy benefit rural landowners?
Landowners receive stable rental payments for hosting wind turbines, which occupy only a small portion of their land. This income helps diversify their revenue, providing financial stability even during volatile market conditions.
  • Can wind farms coexist with agricultural operations?
Yes, wind turbines take up only a fraction of the land, allowing farming and ranching activities to continue around them. This setup benefits both the energy sector and agricultural communities.
  • Why is North Dakota ideal for wind energy projects?
North Dakota has strong wind resources, large tracts of agricultural land, and existing transmission infrastructure, making it a prime location for wind farms. The state is a leader in wind energy, with nearly 27% of its electricity coming from wind power.
  • Will the wind turbines be there permanently?
Badger Wind Farm is expected to operate for approximately 30 years. At the end of its operational life, Ørsted will decommission the turbines and restore the land to its original condition. Ørsted is committed to responsible decommissioning, including recycling and reusing components when possible.
  • How will this project benefit landowners?
With extensive experience across the U.S., Ørsted values the significance of land to our lease partners. Landowners hosting turbines benefit from:

    • Stable Income: Badger Wind Farm provides consistent, passive income through long-term lease payments, allowing landowners to reinvest in their land or communities and add financial security.
    • Land Stewardship: Only a small portion of leased land is needed for turbines, allowing landowners to continue farming or ranching on the majority of their property.
  • How do you ensure the highest standards for health, safety, and maintenance in your wind projects?
Ørsted is committed to maintaining top safety and quality standards for Badger Wind Farm throughout its lifecycle. We achieve this by:

    • Procuring wind turbines from Tier 1 manufacturers that adhere to the highest quality standards.
    • Sourcing materials and hiring locally whenever possible.
    • Using best practices in construction to minimize environmental impact and support land stewardship.
    • Regularly deploying Operation & Maintenance teams to ensure site safety and optimal performance.
    • Monitoring systems 24/7 to track performance and proactively address any maintenance needs.
